Cosmetic Dentistry - Trends in Dental Treatments

Cosmetic dentistry treatments today do not only improve the appearance of your teeth, mouth and smile, but also restore specific aspects of, or sometimes overall, oral health.

One good example is the procedure for dental fillings, which was exclusively for treating decayed teeth in the previous years. This is now part of aesthetic oral treatments, since advances in this field introduced techniques where exact teeth colors can be matched with the filling and make your filled teeth look like new and natural ones.

Other procedures included in recent trends are bonding, veneers, dental implants and tooth reshaping.

Bonding, or composite bonding, is recommended by a cosmetic dentist when your teeth have some discoloration or chipped parts. Your teeth will be cleaned and prepared for the resins that will be put to close in gaps, alter the shape and/or cover discoloration. This does not only make your teeth and smile look better. It will also help you bite into food better and avoid mouth injuries, which can happen if you have gaps or chipped teeth.

Similarly, if you have cracked or chipped tooth or teeth, veneers is something you might want to look into. They are thin porcelain pieces placed on the front surface of your teeth. Veneers can improve your teeth's shape and color, as well as prevent them from cracking any further and even fall out completely.

Tooth loss can now be remedied by implants where an artificial tooth is rooted into your jawbone. Dental implants give you a better smile and also help you avoid misaligned bites and possibility of having a sagging face or jaw.

Tooth contouring or reshaping is a treatment done by a cosmetic dentist to repair your crooked, chipped, cracked or overlapping teeth. The procedure, sometimes used to substitute for braces when possible, is non-intrusive as it only involves utilizing a polishing instrument to remove small amounts of surface enamel of one or more teeth to correct their imperfections. The surrounding teeth are also generally polished to match your once imperfect teeth. What makes this popular these days is that it is quick, painless and often inexpensive.

It is true that cosmetic dentistry does not concentrate on prevention and treatment of oral or dental problems. It is also true that it was considered not too long ago as a luxury for many. Today, though, these aesthetic treatments, using recent technological advances, make it possible for you to have not only a better smile, but also better oral health through non-invasive procedures.
