All About ENT Specialist & Problems


An ear, nose & throat specialist is a trained physician who specializes in the medical & surgical treatment of the ears, nose, throat & any structures of the neck & head associated to these. This specialist hold expertise in managing all diseases & disorders associated with ears, nose & nasal passage, sinuses, oral cavity upper pharynx and larynx. ENT is known to be the oldest existing specialty in America.

When it comes to the head & neck area of human body, an ENT specialist is expert in treating all kinds of tumors, deformities of the face & infections diseases. He or she is specially trained to treat both benign & cancerous diseases. They are also known to perform both reconstructive & cosmetic plastic surgery.

An ENT specialist can also share the work with a team of proficient doctors in other medical as well as surgical specialties. Usually, a common ground is shared with neurosurgery under the treatment of skull base disorders, ophthalmology for the treatment of structural abnormalities occurring near the eye, plastic surgery for correction of cosmetic & traumatic deformities, allergy for managing sinus disease, oral surgery for the treatment of jaw & dental trauma, dermatology for cancers related to skin & oncology when it comes to managing head & neck cancers.

A lot of things are also common in treatment practiced under pediatrics & family practices such as common infection, traumatic & cancerous diseases & congenital disorders.

An ENT specialist and start practicing after fifteen years of college in conjunction with postgraduate training. An applicant is supposed to finish minimum five years of specialty training, college and medical school programs in order to obtain a certificate from the American Board of Otolaryngology. The physician is also required to pass the American Board of Otolaryngology examination to secure a certificate.

Certain ENT specialists decide to continue with a one or two year fellowship to attain advanced extensive training under any of the seven sub specialty areas. These areas include allergy, pediatric otolaryngology, facial plastic, head and neck surgery, rhinology, reconstructive surgery & laryngology. However, other ENT specialists restrict themselves to one of the seven areas mentioned above.

The most common problems related to ENT include hearing impairment, nasal bleeding, unsteadiness, change of voice & ringing noise in the ears. Usually, these problems exist in the elderly.

The most common causes related to hearing impairment in the elderly include wax in the ear & infection of the throat. This problem result in temporary middle ear obstructions. Other causes include intake of drugs such as streptomycin, hardening of the bones in the internal ear & diseases affecting the nerves.

It is important to consult an ENT specialist for complex issues that seriously require audiogram & specialized treatment such as fitting of a hearing aid. Hearing aids are available in two different types such as the ear model and the other that can be easily clipped on to the clothing.

It is important to consult an ENT in case of any serious problems or issues related to ear, nose & throat that persist for more than a specific period of time.
