Let's face it nothing will ever prevent the formation of wrinkles. But can Botox injections help keep them at bay until a little later on in life?
There is a growing trend, among those in their 20's receiving Botox injections as preventative measures against wrinkles later on in life. Botox is the trade name for Botulism toxin a protein produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum which is neurotoxic.
The idea behind this is that by limiting facials expressions one can keep wrinkles at bay until much later in life. This does hold true - look at a few people in the next few days and have a look at the way they show expressions in their forehead. If they tend to raise their eyebrows a lot they will most likely have lines across their forehead. If they furrow their brow then they will have the "elevens" a term coined for the two line between our eyes. Imagine if, from the age of 20, neither of these people had the repetitive strain of these types of expressions - they would not have as pronounced wrinkles associated with repetitive strain.
Aside: neurotoxicity occurs when exposed to natural or artificial toxic substances called neurotoxins. Neurotoxins kill neurons, cells that transmit and process signals in the brain and other parts of the nervous system.
Botulinum toxin has been used since the 1980, further back then most people realize. Alan Scott, M.D., used it in humans to treat "crossed eyes". And it was in 1989 that Allergan Inc received approval from the US FDA for the treatment of "crossed eyes".
Botox injections are the most common cosmetic procedures with 4.6 million procedures in the US alone. Of course, more studies need to be completed on Botox as a preventative measure or at least a prolonging affect. More importantly know the side effects of Botox and find a reputable doctor to administer the injections if you are going to consider this type of procedure.
Please note we are not condoning the use of any cosmetic procedure, we are identifying a new procedure that is currently being used. Always consult any doctor prior to having any procedure medical or cosmetic.
