Managing Recovery Expectations After Breast Augmentation Surgery

Making the choice to have surgery of any kind is never a decision that should be taken lightly. Understanding what to expect before, during and after surgery can help to better prepare for the procedure as well make an educated choice when it comes to choosing to have elective cosmetic procedures such as plastic surgery. Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common forms of plastic surgery. Today, plastic surgeons will use cutting edge technology to help ensure that your recovery time is as fast as possible. Always keep in mind that each patient's recovery period will be dependent on a variety of factors such as what type of cosmetic procedure was completed, whether the implants were inserted underneath or overtop the muscle, and the emotional and physical sate of the individual.

Breast augmentation surgery is generally performed as an out patient procedure. This means that you will be able to go home to same day barring any complications. The first few hours after the surgery, you will most likely feel sick to your stomach. This is due to the anesthesia administered, which is completely normal. During the first 48 hours after surgery you may be advised to use cold compresses to help alleviate swelling. For the first few days, patients should expect to feel a great sense of soreness and most surgeons will prescribe some pain medications to help deal with the pain.

Depending on the size of the implant, the choice of insertion location and the placement of the implant, the surgeon may need to drain the incisions, which aid in removing excess fluid over the first few days after surgery. Always ensure your incisions dry and clean. Avoid using any types of lotions or creams on the incision area as this may lead to infection. Also ensure all medication is taken to help avoid infection. The surgeon will likely prescribe antibiotics for a period of time after the surgery.

Soreness and pain will be present after breast augmentation surgery. If your implants were placed over the muscle, you can expect a quicker recovery process and less pain. Swelling is often noticeable for anywhere from two to four months post surgery. Limiting the amount of water you drink can help to reduce some of the swelling. Swelling after such a cosmetic process is very normal and a typical part of the healing process. Expect to see bruising around the breasts for a short period of time.

The bottom line is that breast augmentation surgery, while presently a routine and common procedure is still a medical procedure and like all medical procedures, there is a recovery period. A little discomfort during the recovery process is often worth seeing the beautiful and long term results.
