Millions of Americans have vascular (vein) skin conditions including facial redness and rosacea, a chronic condition characterized by flushing or redness of the face. These conditions can cause embarrassment, self-consciousness or even depression.
In the past, people seeking cosmetic improvement for these conditions had to opt for medical procedures associated with unpleasant side effects or expensive cosmetic creams and makeup that only temporarily mask the underlying condition. Light therapy and lasers have been available over the past decade that helped reduce the unwanted appearance of these conditions. The new Excel V laser system, developed by Cutera, is a highly effective, safe and non-invasive way to combat vascular skin conditions in a comfortable manner. It can offer more effective and quicker results then other lasers and light based therapies (IPL), no injections, no long-term side effects and no patient downtime.
How does Excel V work? The system uses a unique high power laser that is selectively absorbed by blood vessels in the skin. The laser selectively heats and gets rid of the abnormal vessels, ultimately restoring normal skin tone and color. It can be customized to each patient's skin condition, offering precise and effective treatments. Excel V's innovative cooling technologies ensure patient comfort.
The Excel V laser system also helps with post-surgery bruising; it can be used five to seven days post-surgery to help with bruising or as needed post-surgery to help with redness and/or scarring.
After an initial consultation, the physician determines if Excel V treatment is right for the patient. Unlike other procedures, injections or topical anesthesia aren't necessary during the 15-30-minute procedure, which is relatively painless. Depending on the patient's condition, the physician places the Excel V hand piece over the affected skin areas until the abnormal vessels diminish. The number of treatments needed depends on factors including the size, thickness and color of the vascular skin condition.
In addition to facial redness and rosacea, the Excel V laser system can treat other common vascular skin conditions and brown spots on the skin. Poikiloderma is a common condition that causes a red and brown appearing stain of the neck area. The excel V laser has a wavelength that can also selectively improve the appearance of browns as well. This allows it to also be ideal for conditions like Poikiloderma, a commonly occurring skin condition that can now be effectively treated.
Other vascular skin conditions that the laser can treat are port wine stains - red or purple marks, often on the face, caused by a localized area of abnormal blood vessels; leg veins - dilated vessels that range from large varicose veins to spider veins; facial telangiectasias, which are distinct, dilated blood vessels that range from 0.1 to 4 mm in diameter which appear commonly around the nose and on the cheeks and chin; and cherry angiomas - small red papules that appear spontaneously on the skin.
The Excel V laser can be performed in the comfort of a qualified plastic surgeon's or dermatologist's office. As with any procedure involving skin conditions and post-surgery scarring and bruising, it's very important to work with an experienced, highly qualified medical professional.
